The MSU Police Department is a professional and progressive agency with a reputation as a leader within the university law enforcement community. The MSU Police Department offers multiple special assignments that provide a variety of experiences for our police officers. The MSU Police Department is divided into three Divisions:

UNIFORM DIVISION


Uniform officers respond to calls for service on campus while enforcing state law and local ordinances

INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION


Detectives follow up on investigations on all original complaints taken by the Uniform Division

SUPPORT SERVICES DIVISION


Coordinates all special events and emergency preparedness on the MSU campus

ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES

The MSU Police Department offers all of the following special assignments:

MOTOR UNIT


Officers that ride a motorcycle and focus on traffic enforcement around campus

K9 UNIT


Eight Canines trained to locate subjects, seize narcotics, detect explosives and recover evidence

SRT


Muli-Jurisdicitional SWAT trained team responsible for responding to high risk calls

DIGITAL FORENSICS


Utilizes the most up to date technology to conduct investigations involving personal communication devices and digital media

ACCIDENT INVESTIGATOR


Multi-Jurisdicitional team tasked with thoroughly investigating serious vehicle crashes utilizing specialized equipment

CSI


Responsible for identifying, collecting, preserving and documenting evidence at a crime scene

BIKE PATROL


Officers that perform the duties of a road patrol officer from a bicycle

COURT OFFICER


Acts as a liaison for the police department between the prosecutor’s offices and courts

SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT


Dedicated group of officers that are highly trained in responding to crimes of sexual assault and relationship violence

FTO


Responsible for molding recruit officers into self-sufficient police officers

HONOR GUARD


Serves as formal representatives for the MSUPD at state-wide funerals and other special events

FOOTBALL TRAVEL TEAM


Specialized detail responsible for escorting the MSU football team during away games

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATOR


Conducts an in-depth background investigation for police officer and civilian positions

FBI JTTF


An officer assigned to a multi-agency unit that investigates terrorist activity under the command of the FBI

FBI CYBER SECURITY


Assigned to the FBI to assist with proactive investigations involving cyber security concerns

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT


Responsible for emergency preparedness on the MSU campus

EVIDENCE OFFICER


Documents and distributes evidence to the forensics lab for analysis

VIOLENT CRIME INITIATIVE


Partnership aiming to reduce violent crime in the Lansing area through a focused, intelligence-led policing model

FIREARMS CADRE


Provides officers continued training for the protection of the public and themselves

DEFENSIVE TACTICS CADRE


Provides officers continued training and skill sets to utilize the Use-of-Force Continuum

FUGITIVE TEAM


Multi-Jurisdictional task force assigned to apprehend criminals with outstanding warrants

PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER


Acts as the department’s communications coordinator between the university and the media

SECURITY SPECIALIST


Maintains and coordinates security for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum

SPECIAL EVENTS


Coordinates and assists with planning for any special event on campus where a police presence is needed

COMMUNITY TEAM POLICING


Builds relationships with the community to be a conduit for information between the community and their respective teams

INCLUSION AND ANTI-BIAS UNIT


Proactively addresses police and community-related issues associated with bias

FIRE MARSHAL UNIT


Coordinates building fire safety inspections and arson and fire investigations

BEHAVIORAL THREAT ASSESSMENT UNIT


Follows up on mental health investigations and performs threat assessments

Sergeant

  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Minimum of four years as a full time police officer, with at least three of those years as a police officer with this department prior to the date of the official vacancy posting.
  3. The candidate must have attained a minimum score of 70% on the promotional process written examination.
  4. The candidate must be successfully reviewed by an Oral Board Panel.
  5. Letter of Intent and resume to the Chief or designee, and completion of the posting requirements for MSU Human Resources.

Lieutenant

  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Attained the rank of Sergeant, with a minimum two years’ experience as Sergeant with this Department, prior to the date of the official vacancy posting.
  3. Letter of Intent and resume to the Chief or designee, and completion of the posting requirements for MSU Human Resources.
  4. The candidate must be successfully reviewed by an Oral Board Panel.

Captain

  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Letter of Intent and resume to the Chief of Police (Chief) or designee.
  3. The candidate must be successfully reviewed by the Chief’s Review Panel.
